When Are We Going To See One Operating System To Control Them All?

I'm talking about having one piece of software that can be used for servers, desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and televisions. I'm tired of trying to learn my way around all these different pieces of software because they are not cross compatiable. What I do with one Operating System on a product, I would like to be able to do with another. For example, I would like to be able to install and use the same photo editing software for my desktop as I do for my tablet. Why? For better and smoother workflow...

Annoyed With The Digital Movie Market

What Gives? The digital music industry has made it's changes to meet the public's needs, but the movie industry is still lagging behind; or should be say still being "Greedy"? Currently, when you purchase a digital movie, you can only play it within it's sandbox. So for example, if you buy the movie "Captain America" on Xbox, you can only watch it on Xbox. If you want watch "Captain America" on your android device, you have to buy the movie all over again. The movie industry claims those restrictions are in place because of piracy, and to restrict & deter it. However, in my opinion I think it's about getting repeated sales. I truly believe that if no one pirated movies, these restrictions would still be in place.

Although, the movie industry says buy the disk(Bluray, HDDVD, or CD) if you want to be able it play it on multiple devices. However, tablets and smartphones don't play disks do they? Not only that, it seems to me that the movie industry is counting on you to scratch, misplace, or break your disks. Today in the digital world, they are counting on you to buy same movies on different sandbox's.

So how can I have a legal movie collection that I can play on all my devices? I can't according to Copyright Law Section 1201..., which is utter bullocks. They say you "own" a copy of the movie for personal use, but clearly you don't. What you own is a 17 cent piece of plastic, and the rest of it is licensed to you so it can be played in a particular patented format such as DVD. Changing that format is illegal, and if you want it on a different format, you must purchase an additional license for that format. Greedy, greedy, greedy... Personally, I think these companies should be sued for fraud. They imply you own the movie, in fact you actually see it in writing or said verbally in their Ad's. What you don't see or hear is the license disclaimer that says you actually don't own a copy of the media, that it's just licensed to you for restricted use. Instead, there are only disclaimers stating you can't copy or pirate it. That's quite misleading don't you think?

Now don't get me wrong. I don't agree freely distributing copyrighted content where the copyright holder has clearly asked for compensation for his or her work. However, what I do have a problem with the fact it's illegal for me to make a backup of copyrighted material for personal use, that is not re-distributed, and that I clearly gave monetary compensation for to the copyright holder. The real issue here is not a violation of copyright, but the fact they want to restrict your purchase to a particular patented format and not sticking to that patented format is illegal, which really has nothing to do with copyrights, but actually patents.

The law should only hold persons(s) accountable for violations if there is proof of circumvention, or proof of distribution without copyright holder's written consent, AND avoiding compensation to the copyright holder. See how simple that was?

The digital movie market is completely FUBAR'ed along with it's copyright laws(§ 1201)...

I'm Thinking About Getting A Steam Machine

It's 5 months after the console battle that started between the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, but I haven't gotten either one yet. I just can't seem to commit myself to either of the console's because I feel like they are next generation dinosaurs. The games that they have, still 5 months end, all look and feel likes games I could have played on my Xbox 360, regardless of the amount of extra power these next-gen consoles have.

I've been eye-balling the Steam Machine ever since I heard of it's inception, but I was never into PC gaming and was dead set on getting an Xbox One, along with a Windows 8 phone, and a Windows Surface Pro. However, since November of 2013, my feelings have drastically changed. While I firmly believe that Microsoft is going in the right direction of it's product designs & branding, I just don't agree with what Microsoft stands for anymore. What I want to do is support Free Open Source Technology. I say that because when you really think about it, the only thing in mankind's history that has truly helped the people is technology. If the world were to share it's technology(the know-how, not the resources) freely & openly, be collaborative and not competitive, the whole world would be a better place.

So in my life as part of my new years resolution, I have started dropping support for paid technology, and increased my support to free technology by applying my time, skills, and usage of such products. I'm doing things like drop windows and adopt Free & Open Source Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Linux based distro, that can actually be used as a server, desktop, laptop, tablet, and even smartphone. I've dropped Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Lightroom and replaced it with things like Inkscape, Gimp, Zed, and RawTherapee.

So I became more interested in SteamOS because of this, as SteamOS is a Linux Distro which is also Free & Open Source. Although I wasn't completely sold on it yet, because rumor has it that EA's Origin will not work on Steam. This eliminates games like Madden, Burnout, Need 4 Speed, Battlefield, Medal Of Honor, and other great games. However, today I found out that Valve's own Gabe Newell says he would have no problem loading EA's Origin onto Steam(Source).

Guess what, now I'm really interested. If I compare the costs, it seems I would save money on using a Steam Machine rather than an Xbox One. IBuyPower will be releasing a Steam Machine for $499 that will be slightly more powerful than the Xbox One hardware wise, but slightly smaller in size. Alienware will be releasing a Steam Machine is that is rumored to be $599, a hundred dollars higher than the Xbox One, but marginally more powerful and marginally smaller. Although, the thing to keep in mind is that the Xbox One cannot have it's hardware upgraded, while all the Steam Machines can. Both IBuyPower & Alienware will also have Steam Machines that will be double the power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but also at twice the price. This gives me the option to buy twice the power now, or buy the necessity and upgrade in 2-3 years from now. Which in my opinion is waaay better than waiting another 8 years to get my upgrade with a next generation console.

* Honestly though, I think the software matters more than the hardware. I think Xbox One flat out has the lead here, but PS4's is utter crap. SteamOS falls short in so many areas that it's not funny, but then they are still in beta and I think they've gotten off to a wonderful start. I could go into details here, but I'd rather not to maintain the size of this article.

Looking at game costs, Steam comes way out on top. Steam keeps track of your purchased games online. There is no DVD to scratch or lose. Do you have any idea how many times I've had to re-purchase a game because the disk kept getting scratched, cracked, lost, stolen, or traded? Believe it or not, but this kinda happens when you have kids & pets in your home you know. Anyway, with Steam you buy the game and it's yours forever. Microsoft & Sony are just now catching on to this concept, but Steam as been doing it for years. As far as game costs, Steam games tend to be cheaper, and avidly have more sales that save you dinero. Then there is the account costs. A Steam account, Xbox Live Account, and PlayStation Account are all free. However, Xbox One charges you $60 a year or $10 a month to play games online, or use certain Apps like Netflix. Being a person who pays for Netflix and watches it daily, I kinda feel ripped off by Microsoft & Sony because an additional subscription is required to use the Netflix app. No other devices charge extra, why should Microsoft & Sony? Steam will let you do all this at no additional costs.

Some bitch that it's not fair because the Steam Machine is a PC. Well so is the Xbox and PlayStation. They all have CPU's, Ram, Harddrives, Graphic Card's, USB Ports, etc. The only difference between a console and a PC gaming is that with consoles you can use a controller and play on your couch using your 60" television. With a Steam Machine, you can now have your PC in the living room with a controller, as the Steam Machine is being designed with this as it's main purpose: to move the PC into the living room. The advantages that the Steam Machine gives you in the living room is that while it's made for the use of the controller first, you can still use a mouse & keyboard if you want to. This means you can play those MMORPG's you've been itching to play on the big screen. Not only that, but you can still use your Steam Machine as a PC, where as with a console you cannot.

Many tech companies are planning to build Steam Machines of all sizes & shapes. Meaning you can get one looking the way you want it. Or grab an old PC and throw SteamOS on it and viola! So far, I like the IbuyPower black Steam Machine, and the Alienware Steam Machine.

Do I think that the Steam Machine is a Xbox Killer, not quite. Do I think it's a PlayStation Killer, hell no. Do I think I think in the long run it will be superior to the Xbox & PlayStation, on Hell Yes.

On a side note, I just want to mention Steam's sales relationship. Steam splits sales 30/70 with the game's developer. Meaning Steam get's thirty percent of the sale and the developer get's 70 of the sale. However, with retailers it's the opposite. Retailers typically get 70% of the sale, while the developer's get 30% of the sale. This is another reason I want to support Steam, because they are more fair with the guys that make the games, instead of trying to rip them off.

Struggling On My Romance Project

So I've been working on a project, a dating/romance site for promote love, passion and romance for couples and those seeking a relationship. For me to achieve this goal, I need a good solid software as my foundation. I liked using SMF(simple machines forum), but it a bit old and not up to date and as solid as it should be.

Then there's xF(xenforo), which is awesome, but after some trial and error it just cannot work to suit my needs. I just have one of those rare projects that is really particular.

I tried SMF, then switched to xF, and now back to SMF. It has been an utter nightmare. I have made hundreds(maybe a thousand) template changes just to make it look better and more SEO friendly, but some issues are so inter-graded into the core that I can't fix it.

I'm to the point now that I'm sooo frustrated I'm ready to throw the project in the trash. Although I know I shouldn't, considering I'm about 95% complete. Then it was be in vain, and I can't have that.

Purchased XenForo

I have to be honest here. I have been using Simple Machines Forum for years. Often trying out hundreds of other forum/portals to find what I need to develop the sites that I want. I have helped out with the development of TinyPortal and Dream Portal for SMF. One day while being frustrated with SMF and it's "know-it-all" development team that seems to think they know what you want better than you do(sony also comes to mind). I was informed that several of my teammates have left to explore xenForo.

Soooo, I take a look at it and was impressed. Very Impressed. I have been dreaming of the days that I would have the cash to purchase it (which brought me back to this blog during this wait). Yesterday, I finally plunged, I couldn't wait no longer; holy cow, I AM impressed. I wouldn't go as far to say it's the greatest thing since sliced cheese, but it definitely has my attention!

I began trying out some new add-ons for it and they work really well. While xenForo is still beta, we can all tell it will turn out to be a major player. If your a vBulletin user, you might want to check it out. The developers of VB back in the day, has came forward to develop xenForo. Without boring you with all the technical stuff of xF, let me just say it is up to speed on it's coding techniques and technology.

xF costs $149 for a license for 1 domain. In addition, you can add a "brand-free" option for $250. While I didn't buy this extra feature, I do plan to upgrade to brand-free(hides "powered by xenForo" copyright), but I prefer to wait until I have a site fully built with all the tools & mods that I need.

Some of the sites I plan to run xenForo on is a Filipino recipe site for my finance, a photography site, and religious site. That's just for starters. If I can convert my xbox 360 site and dating site to xenForo, I probably will. Right now, It doesn't have the mods I need to make that happen. But I'm sure it'll come within the next year...

I'm definitely happy with my purchase and excited to start developing some Styles for it. The only disappointment that I have is the fact it took me so long to buy. Now having actually used it, I wished I would have bought it sooner.

I'm off to play with it...

Making Home-Made Pizza!

Once a week, me and my family like to enjoy and nice pizza & a movie. Tonight we are making 2 different pizza's, and watching the movie "Eight Legged Freaks!". We are making a stuffed crust pepperoni and a experimental pizza. I'm not sure as what to call it just yet.

I always let my near 3 year old join in on the action to making a fully homemade pizza. She helps make sure the table is clean and all the ingredients are accounted for. I'm a nut about eating quality foods such as organic's and not eating crappy junk food like McDonald's. I wanted to share with everyone my experimental pizza, as it was so damn good! So we begin our first pizza making process with the following ingredients:

For Dough
About 3 Cups Organic All-Purpose Flour
A Packet of Yeast
1 Cup Of Water With A Temperature Of 105-125 Range(very important).
1 Can Of Organic Pizza Sauce
Organic Agave Nectar
Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Mozzarella Cheese (desired amount)
Red & Orange Sweet Pepper
Red Onion
Sliced Italian Mild Sausage Bratwurst (cooked already)

First I mixed 1/4 a cup of water, 3 tablespoons Of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, pinch of Sea Salt, and 3 tablespoons of Organic Agave Nectar into a bowl. Stir well, and allow it to set for at least 10 minutes. It will begin to get all bubbly...

Next, I mixed in 1 cup of flour, stirred well.

Now I'll add 3/4 a cup of water and stir well. It should now a little bit runny, but thick.

Finally I stirred in 2 cups of Organic All Purpose Flour until it becomes pasty. The mix should only be slightly sticky, but not so sticky that sticks to your fingers like glue. It should only stick to your fingers if you give it a good squeeze. If it is too sticky, simple add 1/4 a cup of flower until you reach your desired results.

Your mix is now ready to mead. If your are not sure what meading is, it's simple smashing the ball of dough with your hand down on a cutting board or countertop over and over. I prefer my countertop as it gives me more space to work with. Always put flour down in your meading area, so that the dough does not stick. Also make sure your hands are clean, dry, and dusted with flour for better results.

I meaded the dough until it is "almost" not sticky and consistent texture all the way through. From there, I coated it lightly in Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and placed it on the stove. Let it sit for about an hour until it doubles in size.

NOTE: Previously, I pre-heated my oven to about 350 degrees. This get's my stovetop slightly warm, so that when I place the dough on top, it's just barely warm enough to help make the bread rise without cooking it.

Once the dough as double in size from rising, mead it again. Once I have it back into a little dough ball, I roll it out into a circler pizza crust and then place it onto a pizza stone. I paint the top of the crust very lightly with Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Then helps keep any pizza sauce from cooking into the dough and making it soggy.

Now I sprinkled on the Mozarella cheese. The important part here is to make sure I don't get carried away and put too much. I should still be able to see the sauce...

Finally, I put on my topping how I see fit. Yum!

When I cook the pizza, I use a pizza stone to will cook it on the bottom rack for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Then I move it to the middle rack and cook it for another 10-15 minutes until I get the desired browning. All Done!

If you have any questions just leave a comment and I will get back to you. I'm also looking for a name for this pizza, anyone have any ideas?

I'm Back!

After 5 years, I've decided to come back and check out blogger.com. While I'm not much of a writer, I certainly wish that I was. I admire how some people can just sit back and write up a large page of content at ease.

Why can't I do that? that's what I always find myself asking.

Anyhow, I do not know what I plan to write in this blog, but time will tell. Maybe everything, or maybe nothing...

My New Blog!

Well, this is my new blog over here at blogger.com. I Even have the option to move it over to my domain if need be. I haven't decided what I'm gonna do yet though. I guess we'll have to wait and see...
